Freediver Alenka Artnik set a bi-fin world record of 111 meters at Vertical Blue 2023 in the Bahamas. The Slovenian athlete also holds the world record for monofin, diving 122 meters in 2021. (That’s longer than a football field, which measures 109.7 meters.)

In an Instagram post announcing her latest achievement, Artnik noted that after descending, “I felt quite tired and considered to turn but finally decided to continue and realized a strong dive and a new world record.”

Long Lead profiled Artnik in 2021. The stunning story by Xan Rice with underwater video by Daan Verhoeven demonstrates how she went from contemplating suicide to becoming one of the top freedivers in the world. The production won two Webbys for Best Sports Website
